DEVELOPING BASIC DIGITAL SKILLS

FnMozkoL4n_1430664439074.jpg

Everyone are using technologies, we are encountering it everyday and everywhere but isn’t it enough for us to use it as we know it, or we need to explore and developed it more?

As teachers adjust their teaching to effectively match the new digital word of information and communication technology (ICT), they must be clear on what basic knowledge, skills, and values (or literacies) need to be developed by digital learners.

We have 3R’s such as Reading, writing and ‘rithmetic, but they will be complemented by six essential skills to equip students for success in the millennial world they are called as FLUENCY SKILLS. So first what do you mean by fluency? Fluency having mastery or good in a particular subject or activity.

Fluency skills:

  1. SOLUTION FLUENCY- this refers to the capacity and creativity in problem solving. It requires whole brain thinking.
  2. INFORMATION MEMORY- ability to access information, an ability to retrieve information, ability to reflect on.
  3. COLLABORATION MEMORY- it refers to teamwork with virtual or real partners in the online environment.
  4. MEDIA FLUENCY- refers to channels of mass communication such as (radio, television, magazine, advertising, graphic arts) or digital sources.
  5. CREATIVITY FLUENCY- artistic proficiency adds meaning by way of design, art, and story-telling package a message.
  6. DIGITAL ETHICS- digital citizen is guided by principles of leadership, global responsibility, environmental awareness, global citizenship, and personal accountability.

lesson 6

Higher thinking skills, nowadays we are entering the new world of information and communication, everyday as we woke up we are already gathering information through opening our phones and TV’s. Technologies opens our brain into higher thinking skills to help us in solving real-world problem and by that we have 4D’s or what we called STRUCTURED PROBLEM solving process it is also exemplifies the instructional shift in digital learning. These are:

  • Define the problem
  • Design the solution
  • Do the work
  • Debrief on the outcome

lesson 6.1.jpg

It will help the students to explore and to in calculate and enhance their mind in performing or solving a problem. Like what we’ve done, we think a problem that is a real-world problem which we have a further solution to that problem and we discuss to the class by means of using the 4D’s. So by then it is more fun because I’ve think that my mind works like I experience brainstorming in that time.

“The more we explore the more we gain knowledge”

PREFERENCES THE TECHNOLOGY GENERATION

hqdefault

What the old generation likes may not be the same as what the new generation prefers in their life, work and leisure. Sad to say, much of the good things enjoyed by elders when they were students are no longer available to the new generation.

As technology stages change along a global dimension, lawmakers are challenged to adopt wisdom in calibrating the genuine needs of development and not be copycats of other nations, forgetting indigenous potentials in people, land, mineral resources, forestry, and sea space which make the country rich for long- term development.

In the field of education, it is important that critical differences in perceptions between old and young which create a generation gap need to be discussed that’s why we interview some people that are old and young, they are the examples of Veteran, Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y and Generation Z that is done by group. We interviewed them to know how they can study before and now. So based on that interviewed we discovered that some people at the age of 70 and above are having difficulty with the use of technology and when it comes at the age of 60 and below they are already know how to use some technology regarding in their studies in old generation they are more interested in studying in texts which is reading book texts, enriched by illustrations and photos , they go to the school library, use the card catalogue for needed books, while in the new generation they are more interesting to study with the use of visuals( Photos and Videos). In linear 30 years old generation has obtained information in a linear, logical and sequential manner while in the new generation they follows a personal random access to hyper-linked digital information, less superior to elders in focus and reflection.

In Independent versus Social Learners in the old generation, they gives priority to independent learning, prior to participate work while new learners, they are studying through the use of social medias like facebook, youtube and etc… Learning to do versus learning to pass the test, learning to do- old teachers teach the students in order to help them to pass the test while in learning to pass the test- the students acquire skills, knowledge and habits as windows of opportunity afford them to learn. Delayed rewards and Instant gratification. So before when you got a high scores or you are the most outstanding student in the class, you are giving a reward/s by your teacher/s a certificate or medals, nowadays they still doing that but most of the time most youth are more enjoy when they gratification through facebook account or email chats. Rote memory versus Fun learning. Teachers feel obliged to delivering content- based courses, the learning of which is measurable by standard tests. Digital Learners prefer fun learning which is relevant and instantaneously useful to them.

lesson 5

So by then it is true that we are having a gap regarding in Technology Generation. We cannot changed it because today, in every seconds of our life, they are always changing, so all we need to do is to adopt this changes for us to go with the flow of innovation.

“Changes make us better.”

BRIDGING THE GENERATION GAP

21-inspiring-quotes-from-experts-shaping-the-future-of-mobile-7-638.jpg

Is there really has a gap between the old and a new learner? How would you say so? And what is this gap? Gap- it is only a difference in attitudes between people of different generations. For instances, simple things like the manner of dressing , socializing, more intimate relationship like friendship and marrying, etc. still some old things are difficult to overcome, because it is still existing like pre-arranged marriage in china, female circumcision in Africa, etc. even in Education there are still gap between traditional schooling to modern schooling. In some countries schools don’t have technology facilities, that it is understandable that the innovation of digital education may take time. But given the rapid emergence of digital technology at times referred to (ICT) Information Communication Technology there is the need to prepare for bridging the digital gap in the society.

As we discussed in this chapter there are four types of learners but as time goes by it is became five, first one is Veteran Generation they are born between 1925-1945 the economic and political uncertainty that they experienced led them to be hard working, financially conservative and cautious. They do not like changes, they set and obey rules. Second is the Baby Boomers they were born between 1946-1964, they were brought up in an abundant becoming an egocentric generation, they saw the world revolving around them. Third is Generation X they were born between 1965-1980, they were first generation raised on “ to do lists” and grew up with high rate of blended families. They were brought in the shadow of the influential boomer generation. They work to live and view the world with cynicism and distrust. The fourth is Generation Y they were born on 1981-2000, they portrayed as the next big generation the powerful group the first group to grow up with computers and the internet as a significant part of their lives. And lastly, the Generation Z they were born 2000 and above they are the new develop generation that is more attached in using computers.

In this lesson we are able to interview, each one generation and present it in the class by grouped. It is one of our activities to know what is the different generation’s opinion about the new changing world.

Since the new generations are expected to face a future professional challenge of a digital world ahead of them, technology supported skills need to be taught in schools today, or else schools will become a white elephant. That’s why k-12 curriculum is very helpful it is a prolonged educational that allows the students to learn more advanced subjects and become familiar with technologies.

More knowledge, more fun!

AN OVERVIEW: EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY 2

d

“Integrating Technology into Teaching and Learning”

This lesson is talking about the Introduction of Educational Technology 2 it is involving a deeper understanding of the computer as well as hands-on application of computer skills. The course is primarily directed at enhancing Teaching-and Learning through technology integration.

We have done many activities like we need to arrange the course objectives in Educational Technology 2 in ladder form according on what we’ve understand.

gg

·         To inculcate higher-level thinking and creativity among students while provide among students while providing them knowledge of IT-related learning theories.
·         To engage learners on practical technology integration issues including managing IT classrooms, use of the Internet for learning, cooperative learning through the use of information technology.
·         To learner to use and evaluate computer-based educational resources.
·         To impart learning experiences in instructional technology supported instructional planning.
·         To acquaint students on Information Technology or IT- related learning theories with the computer as a tutor.
·         To provide education in the use of technology in instruction by providing knowledge and skills on technology integration-in-instruction to learners.

Another one is we use puppets for a presentation according to the industrialize country and developing country and some discussion about technologies or tools that is used in schools.

In essence, the course aims to infuse technology in the student-teachers training, helping them to meet and adapt to rapid and continuing technological changes, particularly in the thriving global information and communication technology (ICT) environment.

“It’s been said that learning should be fun, so! Let’s have fun”.

UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY LEARNERS

Today, the learners is said to be smarter, they can easily attach with computers and they are addicted to the Internet. Even in classes they are much more interesting with the video presentations grows activities and computer classes. They are so bored when they are just sitting inside the classroom and just listen to the teacher on what he/she discussing.

Understanding Technology learners we are able to differentiate the parents 30 years ago and the new millennial generation. We shared ideas, stories and experiences in our discussion which we understand why are our parents are so strict with us when we are using too much internet and exposing our body in computers. We compared the medial technologies available, the social relationships and the beliefs or values before and today. It is so funny how the time changes in just a second. It is amazing that everyday technologies around us are innovating, but how about us? Are we ready to adopt everyday?

ut

There is the phenomenon of the young generation taking on multi-tasking as they perform tasks simultaneously; well yes! Like watching videos while chatting friends, taking selfie while texting.

So as product of a today’s generation we need to balance the good and bad influence of the technology in our life because having too much is dangerous so keep balancing all the time.

A REVIEW OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I

The Educational Technology I (ET-1) course has truly paved the way for the learner to become aware, appreciative and equipped to use educational technology tools ranging from traditional to modern educational media.

In Educational Technology I, the learner was also oriented towards averting the dangers of dehumanization which technology brings into societies. Those dangers continue to affect peoples and cultures while widening the gap between rich and poor countries.

Educational technology I fittingly refined the distinction between educational technology and other concepts such as Instructional technology – which is the use of technology in instruction, different from school management and Educational media – or the equipment and materials, apart from the teacher himself, and the last Audiovisual aids – or learning media to stir the senses for more effective learning.

This lesson reviewed us from what are we learned in our Educational Technology I. I like the way we compared the Educational Technology advancement in schools of industrialized world country and the developing country. We make a simple PowerPoint that introduce the different Educational technology that is used in the different country around world and present it in the class; we also summarized what we have learned in Educational Technology I by grouped we collaborate our ideas and present it in the class. We also did a tableau by group, we act and present it in a minute, we have done a lot of activities and I love it.

All in all Educational Technology I served;

–          To orient

–          To lend

–          To uplift

–          To import

–          To acquired

–          And to introduce the learner to what is recognized as the third revolution in education, the COMPUTER.
